With over 50 quality stalls and 1,400 vistors the Royal Oak Market is definitely an event for your calendar, and we are currently seeking stallholders for our next market, which is happening on Sunday 19 February. We are looking for stallholders who make their own quality products - so if you make delicious hot food, or artisan food products, funky art, craft or design we want to hear from you.

Whether you are interested in doing a spot of Christmas shopping, enjoying some tasty market treats and a hot coffee, or are keen to hear a few tips on how to make your diet a little healthier, this season's market definitely has something for you!

Once again we have a fantastic array of fresh food stallholders selling delicious treats to be enjoyed on the day - like Baklava and other tasty desserts, French pastries, hot mussel fritters and bbq sausages or other delights to take home and be enjoyed later - such as award winning olive oil, handmade pickles and preserves, Mediterranian dips, gourmet sausages and fresh organic bread. And then there's the tasty homemade ginger beer from Hakanoa Handmade and freshly brewed coffee on site too.

If a spot of shopping is your thing, we have some great art, craft and design stalls for you to check out, including wooden kitchen products, handmade cards, jewellery, natural soaps and oils, beautiful soy candles, funky childrens clothes and lots more!

If you are interested in hearing some healthy living tips then be sure to join Keith from Keith's Wheatgrass at his free presentations on the health benefits of this wonder-grass and Rebekah from Hakanoa Handmade, who will be talking to us about the her handmade ginger beer and the health benefits of this delicious product.

Join Keith at 10.30am and 12.30pm and learn about the health benefits of wheatgrass, enjoy juice tastings and learn how easy it is to grow wheatgrass at home. Keith will also be demonstrating the popular and affordable manual wheatgrass and fruit juicer by Lexen. Wheatgrass growing kits will be available as well as organic New Zealand wheatgrass seed.

Treasure Hunt - FREE EVENT

Join CCS Disability Action as we lead your kids on a treasure hunt around our Community Gardens. Kids will get the chance to learn about various plants and vegetables and will take home a small prize. Treasure Hunts will take place throughout the day.

True to its vision the Royal Oak Market continues to bring together the ideas of community, culture, healthy living and sustainability through the stalls, people and and events on the day. November sees the market's second year anniversary, and with it being just before Christmas we are planning for an even bigger event than the previous markets.

1,400 people attend August market

CCS Disability Action continues to host the increasingly popular Royal Oak Market at its Erson Avenue site in Auckland. Now in its second year, the market continues to go from strength to strength, increasing each time in visitor numbers – 1,400 people attended the Royal Oak Market held in August.

We are often told a big draw card for visitors is the market’s vision – the way it brings together the ideas of community, culture, healthy living and sustainability – through the stalls, people and events.

As well as sharing in the sunshine and browsing the fantastic stalls, visitors to our August market had the chance to hear from Terry Hatch, world renowned plant propagator and native plant specialist, when he shared his knowledge in his free talk about the ecology of small gardens in the urban environment. There was also the opportunity to get tips and advice from our community garden volunteers. The Auckland branch of the Cactus & Succulent Society of NZ were onsite to demonstrate re-potting, sowing seeds, answer any questions and show off an amazing selection of cactus and succulents.

The next market will happen on Sunday 20 November from 10am – 2pm at 14 Erson Avenue, Royal Oak.

It looks like the sun is set to shine on tomorrow... its going to be a bit of a chilly one though so fortunately there will be lots of hot food and fresh coffee on sale to keep us warm as we browse the fantastic selection of stalls..

While you are at the market, be sure to catch up with our gardening experts for information on how to get the most out of your garden this spring, and if you have the kids with you, sculptor Judith Rosamund will be doing childrens' hand casts at her stall in the craft area.

And make sure you grab a ticket for our raffle.. the hamper is always filled with lots of goodies generously donated by our stallholders and of particular note this time round will include an under bench water filter kit from Rainline. Now that would be nice to win!

With just under two weeks to go until our winter market (Sunday 21 August) we are starting to get very excited by the number of delicious food stalls plus funky arts and crafts that will be part of the day.

Devon Olives

We are delighted to have many of our regular stallholders back for this event - we are already thinking about the delicious sweet and savoury crepes from La Creperie, fresh organic bread from Paris Berlin bakery, Devon Olives with their lovely, award winning, olive oil, Mediterranean dips from PNP foods and homemade ginger beer from Hakanoa Handmade Drinks followed by some tasty treats from Cheltenham Cakes and Dessert Therapy - and that's just a few of the food stalls we have lined up!

We have some fabulous arts and craft stalls too - welcoming back regulars such as Sarah C Design and her funky outdoor art, Bellbird Designs and Muzroom with their beautiful handcrafted jewellery, Artic Ice with their soy candles, Felting by Design with lovely felt art and wearable pieces and Summer 8 and Gwendoline with some great outfits and toys for the kids. Sculpter Judith Rosamund will also be doing children's hand casts on the day. We welcome newcomers Nurture by Nature with their lovely organic lotions and creams and Soapure who are bringing their range of luxury handmade soaps.

And we can't forget Helen from Coffee the Monster, making sure everyone has their full of fresh coffee and hot chocolate.

With the market only on once a season it’s definitely an event worth catching - there's certainly a lot of mouth watering treats on offer to get us excited about the day!

Market continues to build links with local community

Now in its second year the Royal Oak Market continues to engage the local community with 1,200 people coming along to our last market in May.

The weather certainly helped – a sunny day between many winter ones – plus the exciting variety of stalls, fantastic arts and crafts, and delicious food to enjoy on the day plus lots of goodies to take home.

The whole site was a-buzz with people picnicing in the community garden, waiting for their children to complete ‘the amazing race’ and just soaking up the relaxed, friendly atmosphere. And with passionate foodie Lisa Loveday doing cooking demonstrations on site, there really was a little something for everyone.

True to its vision, the market continues to be a place where the community can come together and learn about what is happening in their local environment – it’s great to see some of the same people back with every market and others that have come for the first time with a promise to be back for the next one – stallholders and visitors alike.

A lot of work goes into hosting the market and we would like to thank and acknowledge the support from the many volunteers on the day and in the lead up to the event.

The Royal Oak Market is on once a season with the winter market taking place on Sunday 21 August, 10am – 2pm.

Hopefully the sun continues to shine for tomorrow's market...

We are keeping our fingers crossed for a lovely warm winters day tomorrow but even if the weather doesn't choose to cooperate it's going to be a great day out anyway.

With over 40 stalls taking part - hot food, coffee and lots of delicious treats to take home with you as well as a great array of contemporary arts and crafts - there is sure to be something for everyone.

Join passionate foodie Lisa Loveday as she cooks up a few treats from her latest cookbook - The New Zealand Pressure Cooker Cookbook - while answering all your questions on the how to get the most from your pressure cooker, 12pm.

Lisa has more tips in store for us as she demonstrates the best way to preserve the glut from our garden. Lisa will give tips on bottling at 11am and preserving and making jams, jellies and chutneys at 1pm.

Signed copies of Lisa’s cookbook will be on sale.

We are very excited about the fantastic stallholders who are confirmed for our next market on Sunday 22 May... French crepes and pastries, Turkish desserts, artisan bread, cheese, award winning olive oil, gourmet sausages, handmade pickles and relish and fresh fruit and vegetables straight from the garden. Plus the work of local artists, jewellery, kids clothing, natural herbal balms, paper goods, books and much more... We have some stalls which have been with us since the very beginning and others who are showcasing their work for the first time!

The team at the Royal Oak Community Gardens are ready to launch the Autumn Market and while we are looking forward to having all our previous stall holders back we are also looking forward to having some new and exciting stalls.

Applications for the market on the 22 May will open on Monday, 11 April 2011.

We would love to hear from potential stallholders selling fresh fruit and vegetables, prepared food and food products. We also want to hear from independent designers, artists and crafts people who are interested in selling their work at the Market. We also have stalls available for Antiques and Collectibles which proved to be quite successful at the last market.

The flyers are steadily going out, over 2000 flyers have been dropped into mailboxes in the area and posters have been put up in many shops and businesses as well.

Gordon will help you to get a handle on the pruning necessary to make your fruit trees productive. The class will take a walk around the garden, look at several types of trees and end with a practical experience working on a feijoa together.

Noon -- Alice Leonard, Angel Food chef, "Greening Your Diet"
Alice continues to provide you with some great vegan and vegetarian cooking ideas and will show you how and "Why what you eat is more important than what you drive."

Now we are a year old!!!

We have had a great first birthday with a little over 800 people coming to the market on the 21st in spite of it being a busy weekend in Auckland with other events on as well. The weather held out as well, which was a bonus.

The gardens were a success story in themselves with plenty of fresh veges & herbs available. The Master Gardener’s Information Centre was very busy with Master Gardeners answering questions.

The children had a great time at the Treasure Hunt and also planted seedlings to take away with them.

Be sure to grab a cuppa and head to the covered area to hear from Alice Leonard on how to green your diet and 11.30am and some key energy saving tips from Jennifer Kerr at 12.30pm. Jennifer will also be available to chat to during the day at the Sustainable Living Education Trust stall in the foyer of the building.

And for the kids we will have a couple of treasure hunts in our community garden - one at 11am and the other at 1pm and Plunket will be onsite all day offering face painting.

With over 40 stalls selling a variety of delicious food and drinks, fresh fruit and veges plus the work of local artists and designers, there should be something at our winter market for everyone!

The first round of applications have now closed... we have 35 stallholders confirmed and are very excited by the fantastic makers and designers and delicious food products which will be at our winter market.

So join us on Sunday 22 August and enjoy a variety of prepared foods including woodfired pizza, paella, gourmet sausages, mussel fritters, homemade soup, French crepes and pastries, Turkish desserts and more. And we have everything you need for a tasty lunch, or easy dinner at home – cheese, crackers, handmade pickles and relish, salami, artisan bread, smoked fish, award winning olive oil, honey and fresh veges straight from the garden. And handmade ginger beer from Hakanoa Handmade will be on sale to compliment all the lovely food!

Be sure to check out the funky art and craft section – perfect gift ideas or treats for yourself - beautiful ceramics, pottery, cushions and homewares, wooden products and ponga sculptures, contemporary jewellery, handmade cards and stationery, baby clothes and accessories, toys, work from local artists, herbal balms and creams and so much more... And it’s all hand made by local artists, designers and craftspeople.

If you have attended the market before you will know the types of stalls we are intersted in - high quality and delicious food and food products and stallholders selling their own contemporary art, fashion and design.

I can recommend that those of you interested in an indoor stall (art, craft and design stalls) to get your application in well within the closing date (28 July) as we are always have a lot of interest in these stalls and the space fills up quickly.

Another successful market!

Well, the Royal Oak Market has been and gone for the third time - it always seems to come around so quickly and then is over so quickly as well!

It was another successful market for us here at CCS Disability Action. It was great to have some new stalls mixed in with those who have been with the market since it started in November. We had 1,000 people along on Sunday and the feedback has been really positive, particularly about the great mix of high quality stalls and the interesting work that was available.

We would like to thank all the volunteers who help make the event so successful as well as acknowledge the support from Speedy Signs Newmarket, Onehunga News and the Central Leader for helping us spread the word.

Stallholders that were part of the May market are listed on the side of this blog and I have linked into those that have websites. So if there was something you saw that you loved, but didn't buy on the day (don't you hate that!), then hopefully they have a website and you can make that purchase.

The Royal Oak Market is fast becoming a popular local event - its on once a season with the next one happening on Sunday 22 August. The art, craft and design (inside) section of the market is pretty much at full capacity, but we do have space for stalls outside... and we have identified a few things that we are missing with our current combination of stalls. We want to hear from you if you make or grow any of the following:

We have just spent the morning confirming the first round of successful applications for the Autumn market, and are very excited by the fantastic makers and designers, and tasty food stalls which will be at our Autumn market.

Do you make, bake, grow or create?

Planning is well underway for the next market in February and we have some fantastic stallholders lined up - many of those at the last market will be back, plus some new ones who we are quite excited about!

We are still accepting applications and really want to hear from local producers of prepared food and food products and growers of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The following are some gaps we have identified with our current combination of stalls:
- Homemade style preserves, chutneys and jams
- Artisan cheese
- Free range eggs
- organic / spray free fruit and veges
- Prepared food which can be eaten at the market

And we are interested in hearing from any other foodies as well!

We are also interested in hearing from new independent designers, artists and crafts people who are just starting out or those or attend other markets and are interested in selling their work at our market. In particular:
- clothing
- homewares
- printed t-shirts
- ceramics
- art
- lamps and lighting

The intention of the market is to connect with the local community and to provide a venue for local producers to sell their products so if you make, bake, grow or create we want to hear from you!

Over 1,200 people attend the Royal Oak Market

The weather didn’t seem a huge deterrent as over 1200 people descended on the first ever Royal Oak Market, making it a successful event for the organisers, stallholders and the community.
For the event organisers – CCS Disability Action – it was an opportunity to open their community gardens to the public and demonstrate their commitment to building inclusive communities. Barbel Winter, Regional Manager says, "what was so great about the market was introducing new people to what we are doing as an organisation – CCS Disability Action has gone through lots of changes in its almost 75 year history and like the organisation the garden has moved on from being a segregated place for disabled people, to a place were everyone can feel included. It is important to us to show this to the community".

And what better way to involve the community than with a new market, in an area where there is nothing else quite like it.
"What was so great about this market is our focus on community – we want to create an atmosphere where people come together with their friends and family, have a chat and find out about what’s happening in the community. And purchase some great products from local producers", she says.
It seems CCS Disability Action pulled it off – with great stallholders, community projects and talks on sustainable living practices, there was something for everyone, and many people are looking forward to the next market which will be held on 21 February.

Confirmed stallholders for the market

We have over 40 great stallholders for the first ever Royal Oak Market, and with such a great variety of food, products, produce and arts and crafts we know there will be something for everyone.

On the day we will have stallholders selling smoked fish, cheese, bread, olive oil, honey - all the perfect ingredients to take away to enjoy a picnic, and if you will be at the market over lunch we will have sweet and savoury crepes, gourmet sausgages, South African bbq and samosas, plus marinated raw fish... and coffee of course! There's a great picnic area in the garden where a busker will be playing so you can kick back and enjoy your food, before you head off shopping again.

We have a great selection of art and craft stalls - perfect gift ideas or treats for yourself - beautiful ceramics, jewellery, funky t-shirts and baby clothes and accessories, hand made cards, work from local artists, natural wood planter boxes, herbal balms and creams and so much more...

Its all happening on 22nd November - 10am - 2pm at 14 Erson Avenue, Royal Oak. Close to public transport or parking is available (by gold coin donation) at Royal Oak Intermediate School - cnr Symonds and Trafalgar Streets, Royal Oak.
